For the past decade, Marie Chao has worked extensively in Hollywood on feature films and episodic television. No stranger to big budget Hollywood productions, she has pulled focus and assisted on films with Tom Hanks, Robert Redford (Lions for Lambs), Courtney Cox (Dirt) and Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback). She has gained professional experience alongside award-winning filmmakers Daniel Myrick (The Believers), Tsai Ming-Liang (The River, The Hole), and Wim Wenders (Land of Plenty).
Assisting cinematographers Nancy Schreiber ASC, Robert Primes ASC, Darius Khonji, AFC, ASC and James Cressanthis, ASC, Ms Chao learned the craft of lighting, composition, lens choice, and shot design from some of the best in the business.
Her own venture into cinematography can be seen in independent features, music videos, commercials, and multiple award winning shorts, including the Best Cinematography Award for the short film “Blood Shot” at the Ft. Lauderdale Saints and Sinners Film Festival, and “Parachute Kids” (跳傘小孩), directed by award-winning Taiwanese filmmaker Tom Shu-Yu Lin (林書宇).
In addition to cinematography, Marie has expanded her creative endeavors to the world of high-end still photography. With her background in fine arts and experience in visual storytelling, she brings an exceptional cinematic style to her photo projects.
Recently, her photo “Jaipur Flowers” was selected as cover art for publication by The Art House in London, which was followed by worldwide release of her work for Peace Jam 2008 featuring Nobel Peace Laureates such as Desmond Tutu. Her beautiful still portraiture and behind-the-scenes photos appear as part of Hasbro Company’s nationwide launch of “U Dance”, showcasing rap/pop artist Chris Brown.
KAN, a selection from her photo series of abstract images, pushes the boundary of digital art and technology and has a publication date of March 2010.
